Civilian visitors barred for two days a week on Kashmir toll road

It is a pass that might plunge the Kashmir Valley right into a perpetual kingdom of disaster. Reeling below New Delhi’s rule, for the time being, Jammu and Kashmir have been hit with the arguable selection to prohibit motion of civilian traffic for two days per week (Sunday and Wednesday) for free movement of convoys. In this regard, an assertion issued by the government said, “There can be a whole ban on civilian visitors at the motorway throughout these two days from four am to 5 pm. This prohibition will be from Baramulla through Srinagar, Qazigund, Jawahar-Tunnel, Banihal, and Ramban until Udhampur.”

This two-month lengthy ban, which lasts till 31 May, is probably to drive further the wedge among New Delhi and Kashmir, observers said. And it’s going to have an immediate effect on the already fragile economy of Kashmir, something that has yet to get better because of the devastating floods of 2014. “This is not anything. However, an Israeli attitude to show Kashmir into a South Asian Palestine,” Shah Faesal, the chairman of Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM), stated.

“How can any democratic society implement a ban on the movement of human beings, and the way wouldn’t it justify the diktat?” After a suicide bombing left 40 CRPF soldiers dead within the Lethpora area of Pulwama on 14 February, there were grave allegations of abuse, harassment, and beating of Kashmiris plying on the highways of the forces, mainly using the Indian Army. There have been protests, online court cases, and a few residents have advised on Facebook that “This is what is inaccurate with New Delhi in Kashmir.”

On 2 April, students took to the streets and blocked the toll road after the forces deployed on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at Lethpora barred their bus from moving toward the faculty. When the driving force and students complained that they were getting late, they thrashed through the navy. “We instructed them please allow us to go to high school. They commenced beating us,” Abrar Ahmad, a Class 7 student of Hajahad High School in Awantipora, said on Tuesday. “The college bus is yellow; we put on a uniform and do not appear like militants, so why did they beat us?” he requested.

When this question changed into posed to the Srinagar-primarily based 15 Corps commander, Lieutenant-General KJS Dhillon, he denied having to stumble upon any case of harassment or beating. He said squaddies had been doing their responsibility and are being “sensitized” before being deployed at the countrywide highway. “My men are there, and I am aware of the situation. No harassment is taking the region,” Dhillon stated.

But at the ground, troops carry long bamboo canes, and everyone who tries to overhaul whilst a convoy is plying is overwhelmed black and blue. In one current incident at Pattan, a soldier broke the windowpanes of an automobile within the predominant metropolis and beat the driving force after he attempted to get out of a line and actually told the infantrymen that his mom becomes a cancer patient who changed into going for chemotherapy to a Srinagar health facility.

On any given day, officers stated, as a minimum of four lakh motors is on the roads of the Kashmir division. In the Srinagar district on my own, there are 1. Five lakh motors registered, and half of-of them ply in the direction of the districts. The pro-India politicians have also criticized the clean order. Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Gani Lone stated that the selection could have disastrous “social, political and economic results.”
